Review: The Tops in Busay, Cebu

Known to the locals as “Tops,” this relaxing spot is found in Barangay Malubog, Busay, Cebu City. The route to Tops takes you through some of the city's best sights. Although it might be dizzying for some, the route can be just as fun as as a roller coaster ride because of all the twists and turns you'd make to get to the top. The drive or commute starts at JY Square Mall, a short distance from Waterfront Hotel or Asiatown I.T. Park.  From this tiny mall you take the road north. The moment you feel your ride starting to go uphill then you know you're going the right way.  Shortly after, you'll be greeted by one of Cebu's most prominent hotels – the Marco Polo Hotel. Just follow the road till you get to the very top! The journey takes around 20 minutes from JY Square Mall.

TIP: Bring some gum along. As you go higher, you’ll need something to pop your ears!

There is an entrance fee of P100/person. It’s structured around the mountaintop so you get a 180º view of the city below. There are little shops found on the left side of the entrance. You can buy food and drinks, but there are also souvenirs and other knick-knacks for sale.

The perfect time to go is around 5:00pm, just before sunset. It really is a beautiful sight that you can fully enjoy because of the cool mountain air. Although, I recommend you come prepared. Don’t forget to bring along a pashmina or a sweater because it can get pretty chilly as night falls. And bring your own food. There are mini cave structures along the perimeter where you can gather and have a meal or a round of drinks. There are toilet facilities available but as in any public bathroom, beware! Arm yourselves with your own paper and disinfectants!

At the far left side of the area, you will find their one & only attraction – the Lovers’ Bell. There are some instructions posted on it for you and your partner to follow as you ring it.

There’s not much to do but take photos of the city lights. It’s not ideal for tourists. It is however, a really good place to reflect, plan, or simply think about life and how lovely it is in Cebu.

TIP: Avail of their discount cards so you can get 50% off on entrance fees!
