If you try to ask your friends or relatives about tourist’s spots to go to in Bohol, you’re surely be advised of this one. Sagbayan Peak, prior to its creation, has had a number of speculations before as to how it would affect the tourism boom of Chocolate Hills. Fortunately, it is evident nowadays that it really enhanced the tourism status of the island without covering the beauty of the long-created Chocolate Hills in Carmen Bohol. Sure is, it has its own simple beauty that lures locals and foreign visitors alike.

Sagbayan Peak, as the name says, is located in Sagbayan at the central part of Bohol. Being of Boholano ancestry, I am fortunate enough to be able to pass and even drop by the place every now and then.

Getting There

If you are from outside of Bohol, you can ride a bus going to Carmen from either ports of Tubigon or Tagbilaran. If by bus, it would cost you 30 PHP from Tubigon (around 40 minutes) and 60 PHP from Tagbilaran (around 1 hour and 15 minutes). V-Hire or van for hire is also available. That would be around 80 PHP from Tubigon port (20 to 30 minutes). Practically, most people opt to go by Tubigon port in going to Sagbayan Peak since it’s a lot nearer than Tagbilaran.

If I am to describe it, Sagbayan Peak is like two to four hills connected by manmade structures. Entrance fee is 30 PHP for both children and adults. It’s more like a mini Disneyland for kids minus the high-end amusement machineries. Disney and Marvel figures are very much within reach for kids and adults to pose with. If you’re a Facebook addict, perhaps pictures with these might earn you lots of “likes”. It has a canteen at the top of the hill with a spacious open hall for discos or events during weekends. Souvenir shops are there too if you want to buy some “pasalubong”. Tarsier-inspired stuff toys, bags, shirts, figures…you name it. To experience more of nature, you can also go inside their butterfly dome. It cost 10 PHP entrance. It’s really a colorful place, but butterflies hardly touch your palms. Walking from one hill to another makes you feel like walking in a mini and less extensive Great Wall of China structure. It has a mini playground and a swimming pool area too. The pool area comes with another fee of course.

Bohol wouldn’t be complete without a view of the endangered wide-eyed tarsier. They too have these in their place with around 3 tarsiers in clear view. However, you can’t touch them nor have flashes in your camera when taking pictures.

Personally speaking, the best part of Sagbayan Peak is the breathtaking view of the other hundreds of hills during the day and a far view of the sparkling Cebu Island at night. The place could get really hot by day, yet it’s oppositely cool by night. Indeed, this is one good place for any family and “Barkada” to go to.
