Pit Señor! What Sinulog Really Means, and How to Join Respectfully
Travel and Community
Sinulog is a prayer-dance first, a festival second. Here's what "Pit Señor" means and how to join Cebu's biggest celebration respectfully.
Every January, Cebu City turns red and gold, drums echo from early morning, and the greeting you hear on every street is "Pit Señor!" If it's your first Sinulog, or you're bringing visitors, it helps to know what you are actually joining. Sinulog is a party, yes. But it began, and still stands, as a prayer.
Two celebrations, one feast

The Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu describes two different things that people often lump together. The Traditional Religious Sinulog is a roughly one-hour solemn dance offering led by the Basilica's Augustinian community at the Santo Niño Pilgrim Center grounds, held on the eve of the feast after the Visperas Mass. The Sinulog festival parade is the civic, cultural and tourism street event that most people picture, with contingents, costumes and drums.
Both honor the Señor Santo Niño, the Child Jesus. The Fiesta itself falls on the third Sunday of January.
Where the name comes from

"Sinulog" comes from the Cebuano word sulog, meaning a water current. The forward-and-back steps of the dance echo the movement of the sea. Dancers traditionally hold a candle and call out the name of the person they are dancing for, then end with "Pit Señor!"
What "Pit Señor" means
"Pit" is short for sangpit, to call on or ask. The Basilica cites Cardinal Ricardo Vidal in explaining that the phrase is a prayer of worship, praise, petition and thanks to the Señor, not only a friendly greeting between devotees. So shout it with joy, but know that for many people around you it is sincere.
Small ways to be a good guest

- Treat the dance as worship first and performance second. The Basilica's own guidance invites devotees to dance as an offering of prayer.
- Buy your candles from the vendors on the Basilica steps. They sell red candles, the Santo Niño's color, and they are happy to explain them to first-timers. Your purchase supports their families.
- Expect crowds. Estimates for Sinulog attendance run from 1.5 to 3 million people, so plan your route and meeting points early.
- Respect the image and the church space. Touching or kissing sacred images is a long-standing Filipino devotional custom, so follow the lead of those around you and the Basilica's ushers. The dance has traditionally been done in the churchyard rather than inside the church.
- Be patient with changes. Organizers are still finalizing the Sinulog 2027 schedule and contingents, and the Basilica's Fiesta Señor schedule has been adjusted in recent years.
What's new for Sinulog 2027
Planning for 2027 is underway. The Sinulog Foundation and the City are working on the activity schedule, participating contingents, and higher subsidies for out-of-town groups, and the working theme reported in September is "One Beat. One Dance. One Vision." Check the Basilica and the Sinulog Foundation for the official programme once it is released.
Viva Pit Señor!
