Where to Eat in Carcar, Cebu: Lechon, Chicharon and Local Favorites

Carcar City, about 40 km south of Cebu City, is known for its lechon and chicharon. Here is where to eat, what to order, roughly what it costs and how to make the most of a food trip.

Ask a Cebuano where to find the best lechon outside the city and many will say "Carcar." The heritage city, roughly 40 km and about an hour south of Cebu City, is a popular food stop for anyone heading to Argao, Oslob or Moalboal, and it is easy to do as a day trip on its own.

This guide covers where locals and visitors usually eat, what to order and what to expect. Prices and stall names change often, so treat the amounts below as rough guides rather than fixed rates.

The easiest place to start is the public market at the Carcar Rotunda, close to the church. Lechoneras (lechon sellers) line up with whole roast pigs from early morning, and you can buy by the kilo or by the half kilo, with the meat chopped and weighed in front of you. Published market hours are around 5 AM to 10 PM daily, though stalls tend to be busiest in the morning and sell out by late afternoon.

Carcar lechon is often described as milder and a little citrusy compared with the stronger, spicier style of Talisay. Local writers credit a local herb, known as patiotes or pasyote, in the seasoning. It can be slightly salty on its own, so many people add some of the sauce or drippings.

Tips

  • Ask for a small taste first. Many sellers are happy to let you try.
  • Prices are by weight and have changed over the years. Reports from news and reviewers put it at roughly ₱200 per half kilo in recent years, but please confirm the current rate before you order.
  • Pair it with puso (hanging rice). The market has stalls selling it.
  • Some canteens beside the stalls let you eat on the spot if you order a viand from them.
  • Haggling is part of market life, but be polite.
  • If you commute, tell the bus driver or conductor to drop you at "Carcar Market." Fares from Cebu City were reported at about ₱50 by bus and ₱60 by V-hire in a 2018 SunStar feature, so expect somewhat higher today.

Carcar is also known for chicharon. One local food blog counted more than 80 chicharon makers in the city, and kiosks around the rotunda sell it by the pack. You will see two common types: "kubal," which is almost pure skin, and a version with some meat and fat attached. Both are good dipped in plain vinegar.

Names that come up often include Mat Mat (an older maker that also sells tapa), D' Sisters Chicharon in Bolinawan and EarlJohn Special Chicharon. Because this list comes from older blog posts and traveller listings, please check that a shop is still open and see what is on offer before making a special trip.

The Department of Tourism also set up a Tourist Rest Area in Carcar in 2023 with a pasalubong center that carries chicharon, banana chips and chocolate crunch, which is handy if you want to buy a few things in one place.

Save room for the lighter snacks. Ampao is puffed rice crispies, usually sold in bags and often sweet. Bocarillo is candied strips of young coconut. A past MyCebu.ph guide listed it at about three packs for ₱50, though prices have surely risen since. Banana chips and chocolate crunch are also common at pasalubong stalls.

If you want to try paksiw na isda, a fish dish (often tuna) simmered in vinegar in a clay pot until the bones are very soft, look for it at the market canteens.

Sit-down restaurants and cafes

If you would rather eat in air-conditioned comfort, Carcar has a modest but growing list of restaurants. These are names that appear on travel listings and local blogs. We have not verified current hours or menus, so check their pages before you go.

  • Acacia Grill and Restaurant (Valladolid): a long-time sit-down option, known for a large shoe display. It is the priciest of the group, in the mid-range bracket.
  • Angeles Cafe and Restaurant: a small local restaurant with favorable early reviews, though few reviews overall.
  • Cafe Terraza: a cafe listed with a handful of positive reviews.
  • Homefront Food House: listed as a seafood option.
  • Kuya Jessie's: a lechon house on General Luna Street mentioned in older blog posts.
  • Fast food: Jollibee and Mang Inasal both have branches in the city, which helps if you are travelling with picky eaters.

Names such as Juan's Kitchen, Osting's, House of Lechon, Daruhan Foodpark and Cardams Kitchen + Bar also show up in online listings and social media, but we could not confirm details on them, so we are not recommending any of them here.

Before you go: a note on pork and ASF

African swine fever (ASF) was confirmed in Carcar in March 2023. At the time, the Cebu provincial government restricted the movement of raw pork and live pigs out of the city. In a statement reported by Cebu Daily News, the governor said that lechon and cooked processed products such as chicharon were safe to eat. We did not find a current Carcar-specific status for 2026, so rules on carrying raw pork or live pigs out of the city may have changed.

To be safe, buy cooked products, keep your receipts, and check the Bureau of Animal Industry (bai.gov.ph) or the Cebu Provincial Veterinarian's Office for the latest advisories. Airlines and some other provinces also have rules about carrying meat products, so ask your carrier if you plan to fly with lechon.

Good to know

  • Go in the morning for the best choice at the lechon stalls.
  • Bring small bills and a cooler bag if you are taking food home.
  • Visiting in late November? The city's Kabkaban Festival is scheduled for 23 to 25 November 2026, so expect crowds and possible changes to traffic.
