Maroo: How to Eat Like the Koreans

Korean food culture is rooted in the belief that we, as products of nature, should absorb and depend on other natural elements. So to stay healthy, natural green (earth), red (fire), yellow (wood), black (metal), and white (water) colors must be included in their diet.

Location

My boyfriend and I were craving for some really good Korean food since we had just mourned the loss of our favorite Harubang Restaurant in Lahug (it closed for good). So I suggested we try the one right outside the Ma. Luisa Park guardhouse in Banilad. It’s located in this complex in the middle of a Korean family KTV and Yobi Spa. It’s called Maroo (not to be confused with another Korean restaurant abroad, Maru).

Parking, Space and Amenities

There’s plenty of space for parking. The restaurant has two floors and can seat, I guess, 50-80 people. It’s very cool, and there is really good lighting. There’s complimentary wifi all over and each table is equipped with a buzzer to call the food attendants, so you don’t get tired of waving your hands in the air.

The Menu & the Prices

The menu is very straightforward with only 2 pages of food, and one beverage list. At first glance, you will be shocked at the P600-P700 per item, but you will later realize that it is a full-course meal good for 2. Well, they say two people but I think it’s more like 2 guys or 3-4 ladies. It’s a big meal. There are other choices they call, “Kinds of Foods.” Here you’ll find the more familiar bulgogiand bibimbap. These go for P200-P300 per order, again they say it’s good for two.

TIP: Don’t make the same mistake I did. I ordered one P600 meal, which I thought was just Peppered Pork, as it said on the menu. And I thought (like a Filipino), “Hmmm, I need rice.” So I made another order of bibimbap. BIG MISTAKE! If you’re only two people, get either two separate orders from the P200-300 list or just get one order of the P600-700 list. Otherwise your table will quickly fill up like this…

I’m not saying I regret ordering the bibimbap. It was fan-tastic! But it was too much for just two people. We were soOOOo full! Everything was delicious!

I gotta say, I love how Koreans eat. Everything is well thought out. There’s a variety of colors, textures, flavors, and even temperatures!
