Getting Around Cebu, Part 1: From Mactan-Cebu Airport to Your Hotel
Travel and Community
Just landed in Cebu? Part 1 of our transport series explains the airport taxis, Grab pick-up bays and pre-booked transfers, with rough fares to Cebu City.
Welcome to Cebu! Whether you are a first-time visitor or an expat just moving in, your first big question after landing is usually the same: how do I get to my hotel without overpaying?
This is Part 1 of our five-part series on getting around Cebu. We start at Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) in Lapu-Lapu City, and later parts cover taxis, jeepneys and buses, tricycles and habal-habal, and trips out of the city.
Your main options at the airport
- Airport (yellow) taxis: metered taxis that queue outside the terminals.
- White taxis: regular metered taxis that also serve the airport.
- Grab or other ride-hailing: book through the app and meet your driver at the pick-up area.
- Pre-booked transfers: arranged through your hotel or a travel platform before you fly.
There is no single "best" choice. Taxis are the simplest if you have no mobile data yet, while ride-hailing and pre-booked transfers show a price before you ride.
Yellow vs white taxis
According to travel site AirMundo, yellow taxis run only to and from the airport, while white taxis run all over Mactan and Cebu. The same guide says yellow taxis tend to cost slightly more but are often newer and a bit more comfortable.
On rates, The Freeman reported that the flag-down rate for airport taxis rose from ₱75 to ₱115 on 19 March 2026. Rates are adjusted from time to time and older guides still list ₱70 or ₱75, so always check the rate posted in the taxi and make sure the meter is running.
Booking a Grab at MCIA
Grab's airport page lists pick-up points at Arrival Bays A to D, plus the North Wing and South Wing drop-off areas. Grab estimates about ₱300 to ₱500 for a ride between the airport and Cebu City, a distance of roughly 15 kilometres. Prices change with traffic and demand, so treat this as a rough guide.
If you do not have a local SIM yet, connect to the airport Wi-Fi or ask your hotel to arrange a car for you.
How much will it cost?
AirMundo puts the usual taxi fare from the airport to the centre of Cebu City at around ₱500, which is close to Grab's range. Pre-booked transfers through your hotel or a travel platform show the price upfront, so compare before you fly.
Heavy traffic can push any metered fare higher, so build a little buffer into your budget, especially during rush hour.
Quick tips for first-timers
- Tell the driver your hotel name and area before you start, and ask them to turn on the meter.
- Keep small bills ready. Drivers may not always have change for large notes.
- Keep your phone and valuables with you instead of in the trunk.
- If a driver quotes a flat price that feels too high, politely decline and take the next taxi in line.
- Save your hotel's address and number offline in case of weak signal.
