What is a Body Mass Index (BMI)?



The BMI is a tool used for determining an individual’s optimum body weight.  It is calculated as:



BMI provides an estimation of fat content in a person's body.























Below 18.5


Underweight

18.5 -24.9

Normal

25 - 29.9

Overweight

30 & Above

Obese

You are considered healthy if your BMI is 20 to 25.  A BMI of less than 20 suggests that you are underweight, while 25 to 29 indicates that you are overweight.  You are considerd obese if you have an index of 30 and above.
